One of the leading causes of weight gain is too much sugar. It is in everything from salad dressing to restaurant foods to dessert. As you know from experience, the more you have the more you want.  The more you want, the more you eat. The more you eat, the more you weigh. Ugh!! How can you break free from the grip of sugar and get rid of that chubby tummy or wobbly thighs before summer is here?

If you want some good strategies to use at home, here are 3 foods that will stop your sugar cravings in their tracks. When you are free from sugar cravings you can make healthy choices, lose weight and feel a lot more energetic.

Food 1 – Cinnamon

Cinnamon is one of nature’s secret weapons against sugar cravings. One of the natural effects of cinnamon on your body is to control blood glucose levels.   Fluctuating blood glucose levels are one of the major reasons you experience sugar cravings. You can add some cinnamon to your tea or coffee or even take it as a supplement.

Food 2 – Nuts

Nuts are one of my personal favorite foods for healthy snacking. I keep them both at home and in my office. Some good choices are almonds, walnuts, cashews and brazil nuts. These nuts are satisfying and rich in important health enhancing minerals.  Almonds are rich in magnesium and vitamin E. Walnuts have brain boosting omega 3 fatty acids. They even look like a brain! Cashews, with their slightly higher fat content are extra delicious and rich in vitamin E, magnesium and zinc. Brazil nuts are known for being a good source of selenium, a mineral that is important for cognitive function, thyroid and immunity.

Raw organic nuts are much higher in nutrients than roasted nuts.   Raw or roasted, nuts are a great way to avoid reaching for a sugary treat. You can mix them with a small amount of raisins, dates or dried apricots, for a little extra sweetness.

Food 3 – Avocado

Avocado, with its creamy texture, is a perfect snack. From a health perspective, it is good for lowering cholesterol and triglycerides. It is also a good source of heart-healthy potassium, fiber and monounsaturated fatty acids. You can sprinkle it with salt and pepper, or drizzle it with lemon. You can spread it on a slice of whole grain toast and have it for breakfast. You can even enjoy it as guacamole, just beware of the chips, those are a serious weight loss no-no.

The natural fat of avocado quells your sugar cravings and keeps you feeling satisfied longer. When you add avocado to your salad, the fat in the avocado will help you better absorb the fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E and K that are in the other vegetables. If you don’t have fat in your salad, your body will not be able to absorb these fat-soluble vitamins.

Even though these 3 foods can be your critical allies in the battle against sugar, if you are really determined to break the cycle of cravings, there is no substitute for getting serious and doing a focused program.  The commitment you make in a program and the structure it provides sets you up for success in getting to your weight goals quickly.
